Why Keep Your People Well ?

A recent WHO-led study published:

​

Mental health issues like Depression and anxiety disorders cost the global economy US$ 1 trillion each year in lost productivity.

​

A negative working environment may lead to physical and mental health problems, harmful use of substances or alcohol, absenteeism and lost productivity.

​

For every US$ 1 put into scaled up treatment for common mental disorders, there is a return of US$ 4 in improved health and productivity

A recent Cigna 360 Well-Being Survey done in 2019 shows a staggering 92% of working Singaporeans report feeling stressed as opposed to the global average of 84%.

 

Lack of Employer Support

According to the Cigna 360 Well-Being Survey 2019, it reported only 33% of the respondents say they have a formal workplace wellness program and only half of those participate. This highlights the need to reassess how beneficial and/or accessible these programs are to employees. Additionally, 44% feel that these programs are not focused enough on mental well-being.

Circuit Breaker began in Singapore:

  • ​Association of Women for Action and Research (AWARE) has received 33% more calls related to family violence than previous year on its Women’s Hotline 

  • Senior citizens especially those living alone and in nursing homes, are  “left to battle loneliness”. 

  • Multiple Stressors such as isolation due to quarantine and social distancing, disruption to work and home routines, worries over job security and coronavirus can lead to depression and anxiety

  • The SAMH Insight Centre, which provides counselling services, saw an increase in helpline calls by 50% since March 2020  

  • Fei Yue Community Services’ online counselling portal had doubled in calls from 40 to 85 calls since March 2020.

  • MP Anthea Ong said that pandemics can inflict “psychological carnage” and can trigger new psychiatric symptoms, even in the healthy.
